It started with the All Mod Cons album then Quadrophenia, closely followed my Dad signing the HP papers to buy a Vespa PK50
What is your fondest memory of riding your scooter?
Only one? Impossible! 😆 IoW rallies in the 80s, throttle to the stop all over the country on a PX200, the Stelvio Pass, scooter friends, connecting a series of bends up well, tagging onto a group of bikes at 75mph, meeting random people because of riding a scooter, visiting Norway with my mate Shane, sliding down the road after hitting a patch of ice and thrashing Solid Air around a race track
What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of owning a scooter?
Keeping it in a usable state to get me to work and rallies / events all year round
What are some of the most mistakes you/people make when restoring scooters?
Not stopping when a job is going badly and telling the (ex) wife that a job “will only take an hour”
What specific advice would you give to someone who is considering restoring a vintage scooter?
Accept that you are not dealing with perfectly matching parts. Once it is built you need to be prepared to make sure it keeps working. It should be built to be ridden.
Where have you found the best resources for vintage scooter parts and information?
LCGB forum, Cambridge Lambretta and scooter friends
What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of owning a scooter?
Riding well, doing more than should expected of a humble scooter and riding a machine that I have done as much of the build as I can
What are some of the things you hope to see happen with scootering?
Variety and acceptance. Move forward, not backwards
What do you most enjoy about your scooter?
Quick, progressive riding, found away on trips and the attention it gets, riding or parked up
What are some of the best places to ride a vintage scooter?
There are untold miles of road around the UK and Europe, some well known some not. The main thing is to get out and enjoy the ride, whether it’s just to the shops or over hundreds of miles
How do you see as the future going with regards to scooters?
I will ride as long as I can, enjoy it as much as possible and feel safe to, whilst the law allows me.
